A spokesman for the Barclaycard Awards Panel said: "What else can you say about Alan Shearer other than he is one of the greatest Premiership players of all time.

"The stats speak for themselves: currently the Premiership's all-time leading scorer, he has won the Golden Boot Award a record three times, he became the first player to score 200 Premiership goals and the first to score 100 league goals for two separate clubs.

"At the age of 32 Shearer is still one of the best in the business and is showing no signs of slowing down."

Shearer himself said: "I'm delighted, very pleased to accept this award.

"It's not the first time I've had it, in fact it's the third.

"But I just wish it was a team award because that would mean we had been successful."

And Sir Bobby added: "I think he was the ideal candidate.

"You've only to look at his matches. He deserves it - he's hit some stunning goals."

It’s good for Alan to get some more recognition, but as you can tell from his comments it’s a fuss about nothing really. The award he wants to pick up is the Premiership or the FA Cup.
