The Sun: Alan Shearer has sounded out Kenny Dalglish about a return to Newcastle as the club's director of football.

Former boss Dalglish, 58, was sacked by former chairman Freddy Shepherd in August 1998 after just 20 months in charge.

But new manager Shearer is looking to overhaul key backroom roles at St James' Park and wants to tap into his old chief's wealth of experience.

Dalglish took over from Kevin Keegan in January 1997, steering Newcastle to second in the Premier League and taking them into the Champions League.

But his time as boss was hindered by a long-term injury to Shearer and he was eventually replaced by Ruud Gullit.
