The Chronicle can reveal a statue of Shearer will be in place in time for next summer, when the Olympic football tournament comes to St James’ Park.
This proves ... despite the warning Derek Llambias gave to Newcastle United supporters "you have no idea how horrible we can be" ... that Mike Ashley won't always get his own way.
Yes he owns the club - yes he's an arsehole - and yes he wants to prove to the supporters he is GOD!
But Olympic chiefs have ruled the stadium must retain its original non-commercialised name for the tournament, so St James' Park it will remain for the length of the competition.
And the Shearer statue - despite harsh words against the legend by Llambias - will be constructed, whether Llambias and Ashley like it or not!
A life-size statue of both Shearer and Jackie Milburn is planned with local sculptor Tom Maley thought to be in talks with Newcastle City Council and Nexus, who operate St James’ Metro station behind the Gallowgate End.
Maley has previously developed a Wor Jackie statue and the project has gathered support from Newcastle fans who discussed the work at a recent NUFC Fans United meeting.
Milburn has yet to take any stick from the 'Dynamic Duo', most probably because Llambias and Ashley haven't heard of him!
Let's not forget, they were Tottenham supporters until four years ago.
So ... if Ashley and Llambias are reading this ... Alan Shearer netted 206 goals for the Magpies in 10 years at St James’ Park and nudged past Milburn in the club’s top scorer chart.
