Aaron celebrates the winner
Sir Bobby

"It was a tremendous victory because the put an awful lot of work into the game out in Rotterdam on Wednesday night

"It wasn't just about the game on Wednesday, it was about the whole occasion and the travelling, and the players had a lot taken out of them mentally and physically.

"We looked travel weary in the first 20 minutes, and we were losing a lot of personal duels across the pitch. But we picked it up, got the equaliser and then I felt we were the better team in the second half.

"But Southampton made it tough for us, they are a workmanlike outfit and they were certainly no pushovers."

Gordon Strachan

"I can sum up the game very simply: Shearer is on their side they win. Shearer is on our side we win.

"He gave a fantastic performance and we couldn’t handle it. His performance makes their team play better.

"I’m talking about the whole of his game. You should show a video of him to any young player and say: ‘This is how you play as a centre forward.’ "

Sir Bobby

"Alan gave a terrific performance even better than the one he gave on Wednesday against Feyenoord.

"He deserved his 100th Premiership goal for the club after being denied a clear penalty and got a cruel booking.

"I would have argued with the referee in that situation."

Alan Shearer

"For the life of me I don’t know how he hasn’t given it.

"At the start of the second half he said: ‘If I have made a mistake then I’m sorry.’ I’m sure he will be when he sees the video, but that’s life."

Sir Bobby

"We looked travel weary at the start, but when we started to win the personal duels and Shola went from dozy to dynamic.

"The players summoned up massive reserves of energy."
