Shearer level with Hughie

Firstly he overtook Wyn Davies as United’s record goalscorer in European competition, taking his tally to 11.

But probably more importantly he moved up to joint third in the all time Newcastle goalscoring chart, level with the legendary Hughie Gallacher on 143 goals.

Gallacher of course was captain of the last Newcastle team to win the league title in 1927 and scored his 143 goals in 174 games, compared to Shearer’s 262 games.

Nobody would bet against Alan moving up to number two in the list, but the big question is whether or not he has enough time left to surpass Wor Jackie’s record.
