Shearer was among the candidates first considered by Rovers after Hughes left for Manchester City last week, but the club were unsure that he would want to give up his lucrative job as 'pundit' for the BBC.

However, The Times reports this morning that Shearer has told Rovers chairman John Williams that he DOES want to be considered for the role.

He knows he is no longer in with a chance of the Newcastle job until he gains experience, and former club Blackburn would be the perfect choice.

He turning down the chance to join Steve McClaren's England coaching team, as he did to join Newcastle's coaching staff when Kevin Keegan got the manager's job.

McClaren is known to be keen, and Sam Allardyce started the day 11/8 favourite.
