"At 31, my body is just not up to doing two jobs again," he told the Newcastle Chronicle this weekend.
"But isn't playing for my club Newcastle United in the Champions' League a wonderful substitute for not representing my country at the World Cup finals?
"As far as club football is concerned, it is the best you can get. Playing against the elite is what this game is all about."
