Shearer content to be number two

Alan Shearer reached yet another milestone at Fulham on Tuesday, but reckons that for once he’ll have to settle for being number two on Tyneside.

Shearer’s match-winning brace at Loftus Road propelled him past Len White into second place in the club’s all-time top scorers list, with his total now standing at 154.

But with Jackie Milburn having recorded a total of 200 United goals, Shearer is going to have to match the best form of his career over the next 18 months if he is to become the record holder.

"I don't think I will catch Jackie's total but I am delighted to have overtaken the great Len White,” he admitted.

"He's a famous name at Newcastle as anyone will tell you, including my old man. So I'm pleased and honoured to have gone past his total."

Another United player reaching a landmark at Loftus Road was Shay Given who played in his 100th consecutive Premiership game.
