"I just hope the star of the show is Michael. If it is, England will have gone very close," said Alan.

"He's a wonderful player and a great ambassador for this country. Of course we have the quality to win the World Cup but another eight or nine countries will think the same.

"It might be asking too much of the squad to win it because I think the more realistic targets are Euro 2004 and the World Cup in 2006, but you won't get me saying we can't win it. What's the point of entering if you don't feel you can win it?"
