McClaren's 15-month tenure was brought to an end on Thursday morning, less than 12 hours after his team were knocked out of Euro 2008 at the qualifying stage.

England, who only needed a draw against Croatia to seal their place at the finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer, lost 3-2 at Wembley.

TV pundit Alan Shearer pulled no punches with McClaren's line-up and tactics, suggesting he make major changes at half-time, mainly replacing goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Carson was like a rabbit caught in the headlights of a car, and this spread throughout the team when he dropped a clanger in the 5th minute.
McClaren's reign is the shortest in the history of the English national team.

The FA also confirmed that the contract of McClaren's assistant Terry Venables has also been terminated.

Martin O'Neill is the bookies favourite at 7/2; Alan Shearer is 10/1.
