Staunton's reign surely lay in tatters after another inept performance against the Group D minnows, who looked set for a shock win when Stelios Okkarides headed home 10 minutes from time.
THe final whistle brought deafening boos from the Croke Park fans.
Staunton: "I've been given the job and I'm going to see it through.
"It will get better when we get a full-strength squad and when it does happen we'll have a good nucleus to go forward."
