The man is credited as being a major influence in the career of Shay Given. The pair also worked together at Ewood Park when Dalglish was at Blackburn Rovers.

Gennoe: "It's just fantastic to be back at Newcastle. St James' Park is even bigger than when I left last time - it is a magnificent stadium and the club also has top training facilities.

"I have always stayed in touch with Shay and Steve Harper, and my past experience working with them was an enjoyable one, so it will be great to do it again.

"I may be biased, but Shay and Steve are two of the best keepers a club could wish to have. You would have to go an awful long way to find a better keeper than Shay, and it is a shame for Steve that Shay's form is so brilliant.

"But one of the reasons his form is so great is because he is pushed so hard by Steve, who would be a regular if he was playing anywhere else in the Premiership. There aren't too many clubs that have two great keepers like that.

"It will be great to work with them and I am also looking forward to working with Tim Krul too."

After he left Newcastle Gennoe joined Dalglish at Celtic before working with Martin O'Neill in a six-year spell.
