And when your goalkeeper says that, there cannot be any excuses from the players or management for the vocal abuse that followed on the final whistle.

This was garbage ... but it was the result of a manager who openly declared he set his stall out for a draw.

He used SEVEN of his summer signings, and I don't think was a half-decent performance from any of them.

Yeah, Alan Smith won the sponsor's Man Of The Match, but obviously the wine was following freely up there in the sponsor's box, and they must have overlooked Given ... who stood alone against the mighty Red Machine.

Sam Allardyce was plunged deeper into crisis as once again his tactics looked like a rabbit's hind leg, with no system to speak off. Just a sorry Newcastle performance that saw them humiliated by a Liverpool side who only took a third of the chances handed on a plate.

For the second game running at St James' Park, the Magpies were taken apart by the visitors. Portsmouth won 4-1, then we spent much of the following game - the Tyne/Wear derby - second best to one of the worst sides in the Premiership.

Steven Gerrard was booed by the Toon Army for his part in England's Euro 2008 failure in midweek, and he said he expected (and probably deserved) it. But he is not a man to let it get him down.

The Scouser opened the scoring with a 28th-minute piledriver and after the hugely out of form Fernando Torres hit the post on the stroke of half-time, Dirk Kuyt made it 2-0 within 60 seconds of the restart.

Substitute Ryan Babel capitalised on the mayhem in Newcastle's defence to make it 3-0 with 24 minutes remaining as the home fans chanted "You don't know what you are doing" and "Big Sam for England".

Allardyce's team were simply woeful and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley looked far from happy on the final whistle. So much so, I thought he was going to join in with "Big Sam for England".

But, amazingly, this could be Rafa Benitez's last game, after finding himself at odds with owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

In truth, it could have been much worse with Torres squandering chance after chance.

Most worryingly was Allardyce's weird 3-5-2 system, that looked more like 8-1-1 as he adopted a system he said would stem Liverpool's flow.

Instead it simply invited the Reds to run the show and attack at will.

Strikers Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins were painfully stuck in midfield most of the time, waiting for a chance to get into the Liverpool HALF ... never mind penalty area.

Allardyce did little to improve the mood at St James' when he replaced Emre, who at least was trying, with Joey Barton after 51 minutes with his side labouring.

There were cheers when James Milner emerged from the dug-out to warm up, and he duly arrived with 59 minutes gone, but Allardyce's decision to replace N'Zogbia was greeted with the same responce as Emre's substitution.

How will Allardyce take it? Who knows? But he had better get it right soon, because the wolves are ready to make his life a misery.
