The former Bolton boss is the clear leader, registering 46 per cent of the 1,000 votes, more than twice as many as second-placed Roberto Mancini.

The result comes six months after Allardyce polled just 10 per cent when Rovers were looking to replace Mark Hughes at the helm.

One betting firm linked to a national newspaper suspended bets on Allardyce last night.

Other candidates in the betting include Alan Curbishley at 8-1, 12-1 shot Avram Grant, Burnley boss Owen Coyle at 16-1, Roberto Mancini at 22-1 and Gerard Houllier at 20-1.

Alan Shearer is a 33-1 outsider to land the job.
