With victories in their last three games - against Reading, Blackburn and Watford, will leave them on 51 points.

Reading will finish ahead of the Magpies in their first season in the Premiership, and that just shows (barring that UEFA Cup run) what another eventful campaign it has been.

Glenn Roeder: "We want to finish the season with three wins if we can anyway, whether the Intertoto Cup is at stake or not. European qualification is still a possibility.

"Most teams who come up from the Championship do tend to struggle, but with Reading it has not been a surprise how well they have done.

"The manager is top drawer. Steve Coppell, wherever he has gone, whatever level he has worked at, he has done very well, so I am not surprised Reading have done as well as they have.

"They had a great result in their last game up at Bolton. It is a tough game, but we are looking forward to it.

"Again, it is one of those games in which, this season, Newcastle have not done as well as they should do.

"I will be looking for the Sheffield United type of performance and result that we had just recently."
