Those times, when the then-Newcastle boss was forced to play an entire back-line of kids, will now be of benefit to Kevin Keegan as he checks out what squad is available to him.

Many of the youngsters have been 'blooded' in the first team, and Keegan has revealed how impressed he has been by some of the young guns he has inherited.

Impressive displays from David Edgar, Tamas Kadar and Andy Carroll in the second string's 1-1 draw with Man City on Monday were noted by the Newcastle chief.

Keegan: "There have been some really good performances.

"At some stage we will be looking at the younger players (for the first team), but only when the time is right.

"I first watched the reserves at North Shields a couple of weeks ago and was impressed.

"On a tough night they put in a performance against a side who were totally committed to beating them.

"I have been pleased with that.

"We've been mixing things up a bit, and at the stadium yesterday gave some of the young lads a chance to see how they compared with the senior players.

"This period is a great chance to try out new things and see what people can do."
