Roeder Defends Substitution

Previous manager Graeme Souness insisted at the time of his sacking: "If I had the luxury of a fully fit Kieron Dyer during my time at Newcastle, I would still be the manager."

We all know Dyer's career has been stop-start since his signing from Ipswich Town, and on Monday (against Arsenal) was again forced off with a hamstring strain. A problem that has dogged his career.

But Roeder claims his withdrawal was a precaution and nothing more serious than that.

Roeder: "It was my decision to take him off to protect him and keep him fit for the rest of the season, not just Portsmouth. We made a substitution early rather than wait for it to ping and then take him off."
