Sir Bobby Robson: "I want to thank the people who have looked after me so well and also provide something for future patients like myself.
"I know it's a heavy workload but it's a worthwhile one. I want to stay active and do something and I'm thankful for the help I have received.
"The building is currently being built but it doesn't have beds, linen, equipment, anything.
"I am committed to fund-raising in the fight against cancer in the north-east over the coming year."
