Robert wants to extend Toon stay

The Frenchman made the statement before putting in arguably his best performance of the season against Blackburn on Saturday, and the news will no doubt please Sir Bobby who has now banished all thoughts of offloading the winger.

Robert has divided opinion among United fans probably more than any other player in recent years, with his languid style and frustrating inconsistency persuading many that he is not worthy of his first team place.

But in his defence others point to his unrivalled ability from set pieces, the number of goals that he created last season and the balance his presence brings to the team.

There is no hurry for any decision to be made though as the 27-year-old’s current contract doesn’t run out until 2006.

The thought of a few more years of Robert in full flight is undoubtedly an exciting one, but the thought of many more performances like Wolves and Barcelona away is really quite disturbing.

Maybe he is never going to be a consistent player and that is why he will continue to divide opinion among the Toon Army.
