Results go in Toon’s favour on Tuesday

The midweek round of Premier League matches got off to a good start for Newcastle United on Tuesday as the two teams in action close to the foot of the table suffered defeats.

Bottom of the table Norwich City fell to a 2-0 defeat ay home to Aston Villa to remain behind Newcastle on goal difference. In the evenings other match, league leaders Manchester City swept aside struggling Leeds United with a 7—0 hammering at the Etihad Stadium. Leeds are currently six points ahead of Newcastle having now played a game more and the heavy defeat sees their goal difference take a big hit.

On Wednesday evening the two clubs directly above Newcastle – Burnley and Watford – face each other with 16-placed Southampton traveling to Crystal Palace.

While it is encouraging that the teams around the Toon are struggling to pick up positive results, Newcastle’s fortunes rest on them being able to take advantage of this by picking up points in their own matches. Sunday’s 4-0 defeat at Leicester once again highlighted the size of the task in hand and it is difficult for even the most positive of supporters to envisage the team getting much out of Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday night or Manchester City at home at the weekend.
