Rafa Benitez insisted that Matt Ritchie was correct to retain the ball for Newcastle United’s game-sealing penalty against Preston North End.
The former AFC Bournemouth winger was the designated spot-kick taker but was on the end of a request from goal hungry Aleksandar Mitrovic after a second half penalty was awarded in front of the Gallowgate End.
In a scene that had shades of Paul Robinson asking Alan Shearer to take a penalty against Sheff Wed in 1999 during an 8-0 demolition, Ritchie shoved the ball under his shirt and refused Mitrovic’s advances.
When asked if Ritchie has been told to take the penalty, Benitez simply said: “Yes!”
And when asked if he’d been right to wave away Mitrovic, he said “Yes” again.
But he did have praise for two-goal Mitrovic after he helped send Newcastle into the quarter-finals.
Benitez said: “I think he did really well, to be fair, but I think Mitrovic it was more about the first goal than the second goal, but I am really pleased anyway because it was a great goal.”
