Obviously winning England Under-21 caps does not guarantee a full cap.

After all, Titus Bramble and Robbie Elliott - plus recently sacked Carlisle boss Neil McDonald - played for the Under-21s when Newcastle players, without progressing.

Milner: "It's great to represent your country at any level and to have as many caps as I have.

"The aim for all of us in the under-21s is to use it as a stepping stone to get in the full squad. If you do make it, it makes the transition that much easier."

Sam Allardyce said that Milner would be "the next Newcastle player to be capped at full level", but with Steven Taylor one step ahead with an England B cap ... the fight is on.
