Mike Ashley promised Rafa Benitez "every penny" this summer – and Newcastle United's manager expect him to "keep his word".

Benitez spoke to the media after this morning's training session at a sun-baked Carlton House, Co Kildare.

As his players gave autographs to a clutch of fans waiting next to the pitches at the luxury hotel, Benitez spoke about United's recruitment efforts.

The 57-year-old, we know, is frustrated that he only has one new face – defender Florian Lejeune – at the club with the new Premier League campaign less than a month away.

Rafa Benitez Benitez – who met owner Ashley in May – was diplomatic when answering questions about transfers.

However, he is as impatient as any supporter.

Benitez is waiting for news from managing director Lee Charnley, who stayed behind on Tyneside to work on deals.

The club is looking to sign Liverpool's Sheyi Ojo on loan. Benitez's patience is being tested.

Charnley and Justin Barnes, an associate of Ashley's who has been working at the club this summer, are acutely aware that Benitez's patience is wearing thin.

For the moment, Benitez can do nothing but focus on the 27 players he has in Ireland.
