Rafa Says Players Had Things To Say

Rafa Benitez has admitted he was angry with his players after the 1-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Spaniard saw Dwight Gayle have a goal disallowed wrongfully for offside from referee Paul Tierney, who also did not give The Magpies some other decisions during the tie.

Newcastle were beaten with a last minute stoppage time header by Steve Cook, leading to the manager to being upset with his players at the full-time whistle, as it appeared they had stopped to listening to his instructions during the final moments.

Benitez had spoken honestly about the problems that the team faced in the dressing room at the end of the match at St. James Park, stating that he and his players were both angry towards each other.

"Yes, I was angry after the game, because you have to say what you think.

"My main priority is to make sure that the players understand what we have to do in the future.

"I wasn't very happy with some of the things I was watching, that's it. We made mistakes and in the end, we paid for that."

The Newcastle boss acknowledged that it was normal for players to be angry and upset after losing a game, however, reiterated the importance for his squad to remain calm as there is still a long way to go before the end of the season.

"We gave the ball away easy without great pressing, and we were giving them chances to counter-attack,” Benitez continued.

“Yes, the players were angry. They are not very happy obviously. That's very common when you lose a game.

"We knew it would be a long season and we would have good results and bad results. We will stay calm and try to do the right things."
