Rafa Hails His Hero

Rafa Benitez says he is happy to see his judgement being proved right after Dwight Gayle took his tally to 16 goals for the season.

But the Newcastle United manager does not want to burden the former Crystal Palace striker with a final target.

Gayle set himself a tally of 20 for the whole season, but is now just four shy of his target with 26 matches to play in the Sky Bet Championship.

When asked if he believed that Gayle would do so well when handing over £10million to Palace last summer, Benitez said: “I knew that he would score goals, I didn’t know how many.

“Now I can see he will score a lot but I don’t want to say a figure.

“Hopefully he can score goals in every game.

“He is a great finisher, he has good movement and he can make the difference.

The 4-0 hammering of Birmingham got the Magpies back on track at St James’ Park on an enjoyable afternoon for the Toon Army.

Yoan Gouffran also weighed in with his fifth strike of the season with a well-taken effort at the Leazes End.

But Benitez feels all of his forwards will benefit if his team can find that type of performance week-in, week-out.

Benitez said: “If the team is playing well he will score goals, and so will the other strikers.

“If we play as well as we did against Birmingham and they are in and around the box, they will score goals.”
