Sunderland were stated as wanting to sign the Dutchman but claimed interest from Everton appeared to be a tactic from PSV to push Newcastle into getting a move on.
It worked and Newcastle wrapped the signing up quickly.
A trip to the Netherlands last week by managing director Lee Charnley failed to close a deal but the claims of serious competition for Newcastle did the trick and a deal was done.
