Sir Bobby

"I'm too upset to think about money at the moment. Everyone is distraught and the players are as upset about it as anyone on the outside, make no mistake about that.

"It is a massive blow, but we have to bounce back. There is no use in crying over spilt milk. The Champions League has gone, it's over for another season.

"We've got to look ahead to the Uefa Cup now. It's not where we want to be, but hopefully we can give our fans something to cheer about in that competition.

"We have to remember that four years ago this club was heading for the first division and only dreaming of playing in such a competition.

"We only needed one goal and we created the chances to do it. But we didn't take the chances when they came. I thought Alan Shearer's free-kick at the end was in, but the keeper got a stud to it and managed to put it around the post.

“Before that JJ missed a header, Aaron Hughes' cross just touched Shola Ameobi on the way, but he still knows he should have scored.

"Kieron Dyer also had an effort saved just a minute after they scored and if he had got a better strike on the ball it was in the back of the net.

"But I thought Kieron was absolutely magnificent. He gave a complete midfielder's performance. He defended, he passed well, he tried to become an extra forward whenever possible and was all over the pitch. It was an outstanding display from him.

"We have been edged out by a very good team and I have to give them credit for the way they have played over the two games.

"They made it very difficult for us, but we're still devastated to have gone out on penalties.

"We missed four penalties and you cannot win a shoot-out missing that many.

"It doesn't matter how many times you practise them in training, you cannot recreate that sort of pressure."

Partizan manager Lothar Matthaus

"The political situation has changed in Yugoslavia and in football the leagues separated.

"That's why there's no competition in the league and that's why it's difficult for a team to go far in Europe. We don't have enough hard games.

"But when you see the two games and when you see what happened in both games, we had more of the play and we deserved this win.

"But there's always luck involved in a penalty shoot-out. I didn't see Sir Bobby after the game but I can imagine he's very disappointed because his team has failed to get into the Champions League."

Alan Shearer

"It's bitterly disappointing and it's a big blow to the club, to the fans and to the players as individuals as we so wanted to be back in the Champions League.

"It's a bitter pill to swallow but it's important that we regroup now and don't let it affect us too much.

"We have to roll our sleeves up and show a bit of character.

"Sometimes you have to be gracious in defeat and, as much as it hurts, say well done to opposition.

"Partizan were a decent side and they actually played better over here than they did in Belgrade.

"They did their homework and sat deep so we could not get in behind them.

"The lads who took the penalties showed plenty of character. It's not easy and it's not nice to miss.

"I thought we might have got out of jail when we missed our first three and then they missed to take it into sudden death.

"You start thinking maybe it will be your night, but it wasn't to be."

Jermaine Jenas

"Everyone's very disappointed. We wanted to play in the Champions League again and we've failed in that.

"All credit to Partizan as they came here, got a goal and made it very difficult for us.

"We didn't expect them to roll over and they sat deep but we had a lot of chances out there.

"The draw will be made and we'll see who we would have got but you can't play at life like that.

"It's up to us to pick ourselves up in the Premiership and UEFA Cup. We can't keep dwelling on that, we're in the UEFA Cup now."

Kieron Dyer

"We've only got ourselves to blame.

"We had a few chances during the game but did not make them count.

"We desperately wanted to be back in the Champions League and we're gutted not to be in there.

"We gave so much effort and commitment but Partizan also played well and made life difficult.

"It was a tough game but we have to bounce back.

"In the last five or 10 minutes of extra time we had three or four of our lads suffering with serious cramp but we dug in and just tried to keep going in the hope we'd get the goal.

"As for the penalties, I'm not one of those people who says the shoot-outs are a lottery.

"I missed mine and I've apologised to the manager and my team-mates and I'll apologise to the fans."
