Portsmouth manager Alain Perrin: "We continue to play, but not enough to score goals and we are here to win games. We need success at home, and the points because we only have six now. A clean sheet is okay away, but not at home. I am inpatient to score goals.
"Given was the man in yellow - and you have to put the ball in the net, not on the yellow man."
Perrin had his own selection problems, with Laurent Robert ineligible under the terms of the deal which took him from St James Park, and striker Lomana LuaLua hospitalised by malaria.
Zvonimir Vukic came into the starting XI, and impressed in midfield, although he was cautioned during the closing stages for diving after knocking the ball past Given in the area, with the home fans screaming for a late penalty to hand them victory.
Perrin added: "We need to continue to work. We had chances to score, but missed and we have to work hard in front of the goal to create more of those chances.
"Hopefully we will play better after the break and score goals."
On his formation, Perrin commented: "I chose to play like this because we thought of Michael Owen, and it gives more confidence to the defence."
