For those who want a run down on Gary Caldwell has -

He failed to break into the Toon team as a kid and spent time on loan at Darlington, Hibernian, Coventry and Derby, before going crying to Sir Bobby Robson for a move.

Sir Bobby Robson: "He knocked on my door and burst into tears, begging me to let him go to Hibs."

From Hibs he ended up at Celtic in 2006 where he became skipper.

But this season has been his worst to date, making major gaffs that saw Celtic knocked of the Champions League and he was the major reason Scotland didn't make it to the World Cup finals producing howlers that cost points.

Then he turned on Celtic with a bizarre statement that had the Tims after his blood.

Some claimed he should never pull on the green and white hooped shirt again.

So what's the facts behind this latest rumour? Well the Chronicle "understands Toon boss Chris Hughton has the centre-back high on his shortlist of players", without quoting anyone but they know his "close friends and family".

A source close to Caldwell told the Chronicle: “Gary has heard nothing about a new contract for a long time.

“Naturally he’s considering his options as his contract expires at the end of the season and he is free to discuss a move in January with interested clubs.

“He doesn’t need to be told how big Newcastle are after coming through the Academy during the Sir Bobby Robson era when the club were in the Champions League.”

So there you have it.
