Struggling to cope with Braga’s three-at-the-back formation, Newcastle produced one of their own.

Paul Dummett moved inside from left-back, Matt Ritchie switched wings to be a left wing-back, DeAndre Yedlin pushed on and winger Christian Atsu tucked inside. Even in their new shape the Magpies struggled to get a grip on the game.

Ultimately, though, it made little difference. Braga’s wing-backs were able to get free at decisive moments and too often Newcastle’s back three found themselves outnumbered. It was a tough night.
