Phil Thompson's Dislike Of Newcastle

He shocked many on Saturday morning with his view on Newcastle by actually saying something GOOD about us:

Newcastle. Just because of the Sam Allardyce influence. We all know the great job he did at Bolton and now he will be working with a little bit more talent. There aren't many players who have underperformed under Allardyce's management and so I can see him getting the best out of the players at the club and the new faces he has brought in and I think they could surprise a few people this season.

He covered the Bolton v Toon game live on Skysports, and the blood drained from his face as Newcastle took a 3-0 lead within 27 minutes. He even slagged off Oba Martin's fabulous over-head kick by saying "his first touch was poor, you expect more from a player like that".

But Thompson was back to form when Bolton pulled a goal back, cheering and acting like a schoolkid, even slavvering at the mouth (I kid you not!).

I met him once at St James' Park when he did a talk-in with George Best, Sir John Hall and Barry Venison. All he kept going on and on about was the 1974 FA Cup final.

Thompson: "Supermac was all mouth, as usual. Geordies this ... Geordies that! But I had him in my pocket for 90 minutes. That shut him up! I kept him on my mantlepiece as a souvenier."

Typical Scouser. One conversation ... HIMSELF!
