Pedro Hails The Character Keegan Brought To Newcastle!

The best Newcastle side I have ever seen, without doubt. And perhaps the strength - apart from the obvious flair in the team - was the character of the players.

And Peter Beardsley says there was not a 'bad apple' amongst the lot of them.

For success you need that bonding. Look at the way the players responded to Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge; look at the siege-mentality at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Graeme Souness had major problems with Craig Bellamy and Laurent Robert, yet Sir Bobby Robson said they were "worth the hassle".

Some managers can get the best out of players ... some cannot.

Peter Beardsley: "A lot of young lads would love to be footballers, and the current players have a responsibility to give them something to aspire to.

"For me a good example of that has to be Kevin Keegan's team in the early years of the Premier League.

"We had a team of great players and there weren't any bad characters in there.

"It was great being part of the Entertainers and an honour that we were people's second team, even teams in the Premier League."
Pedro is looking forward to appearing for the Duke of Northumberland's side against an Earl of Durham XI at St James' Park, and says Alan Shearer can show fans what he still has, despite the disappointment of his Testimonial against Celtic.

Beardsley: "It's great for Alan Shearer. He had a great testimonial and, although that was a fantastic night, Alan didn't get on the pitch to play.

"Now he can get out there and do a bit, which is super.

"And from looking at him on Match of the Day he still seems in great shape.
"It should be a great game and, although I don't think it might be 100mph, there are some great players on show.

"Les Ferdinand will be back too, and it all makes for a great atmosphere."
