The Toon boss has brought in three players, and only Ba has limited experience in what is described as "the toughest league in the world".

Inevitably, the comparison with Sunderland’s spending cropped up at yesterday's press conference.

But Pardew offered a straight bat, saying their purchases was “none of his business”.

Aware that Newcastle’s primary target is to recruit younger players while Sunderland are bringing in battle ready Premier League players, Pardew remained diplomatic.

“We’ve not got involved in the business that they did. We’ve got to do what’s right for Newcastle,” he said.

The proof in the pudding will be the second fixture of the season at the Stadium of Shite ... quite possibly the most eagerly awaited fixture (by the Mackems) in decades.

They are still smarting over the 5-1, although we Geordies never gloat.
