Palace Down To 'Bare Bones' To Face Toon

Administration-bound Crystal Palace will be down to the bare bones, at a time they must be at their lowest ebb.

Palace boss Neil Warnock could only name five substitutes for Saturday's 2-2 FA Cup draw at Wolves and then saw defender Claude Davis carried off with a nasty neck injury, although he has not suffered any lasting damage.

Matt Lawrence, who replaced him at Molineux after just 22 minutes, now looks set to be handed a starting berth should Davis fail to recover in time.

Sean Scannell (hamstring), Paddy McCarthy (shoulder) and Darryl Flahavan (jaw) are still missing and winger Ryan Smith has left Selhurst Park after his contract ended.

But left-back Lee Hills is available again after being cup-tied on Saturday and fellow defender Clint Hill is rated as "touch and go" by Warnock after he missed the Wolves match through injury.

The last time Palace came to SJP ...

Crystal Palace snatched another precious point for their Barclays Premiership survival fund with a hard-fought draw at Newcastle.

The Magpies, who have now not won in seven attempts in the league, dominated throughout but simply could not break through as the Eagles scrapped for their lives in front of 52,123 at St James' Park.

Goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly twice denied Alan Shearer before the break to extend his personal drought - he has not scored in the Premiership since February 2 - and although James Milner and Charles N'Zogbia repeatedly tore the Palace defence to shreds, they could not make the pressure count.

Substitute Patrick Kluivert had the ball in the net three minutes from time, but his effort was chalked off for offside to leave manager Graeme Souness cursing his luck once again.

By contrast, opposite number Iain Dowie will have been delighted to leave with something to show for his side's efforts after threatening only fleetingly themselves.

Newcastle went into the game looking for just their second double of the season, one of a series of telling statistics; they were without a Premiership win in six attempts dating back to March 5 and Shearer had not found the back of the net in nine league games.

That record would have come to an end within three minutes of kick-off had Kiraly not blocked his first-time shot with his legs after Amdy Faye and Stephen Carr had combined to set him up at the near post, and the Hungarian denied him once again on 28 minutes when he unleashed a left-foot drive.

Only goalkeeper Shay Given of the side which started the reverse fixture at Selhurst Park in November remained in a depleted Magpies line-up.

N'Zogbia and Milner provided a youthful but promising outlet down the left, although too often the quality of the final ball was lacking as Palace, admittedly with the help of some committed defending, survived.

They also survived two concerted penalty appeals as first Shearer and then Milner were unceremoniously dumped to the ground by Kiraly and Fitz Hall, although referee Alan Wiley was not interested.

The longer the first half went on with the Magpies not making the most of their dominance, the more Palace's confidence grew, although it took them 41 minutes to muster a serious attempt on goal.

Lone striker Andrew Johnson saw too little of the ball to cause problems, and even when he did get a sniff, Jean-Alain Boumsong quickly snuffed him out to leave Given an interested bystander.

What Newcastle were lacking was a cutting edge, and that no doubt helped to increase the warmth of the reception given to guest of honour Faustino Asprilla, the former Magpies forward.

Milner tested Kiraly once again with a powerfully-struck shot from distance within two minutes of the restart after Souness' injury jinx struck again with Robbie Elliott, who had pulled up late in the first half, failing to return with Peter Ramage taking his place at left-back.

There were warning signs for the Magpies when first Danny Granville and then Gonzalo Sorondo got their heads to Michael Hughes free-kicks, but the home side were soon back on the offensive, N'Zogbia forcing Mikele Leigertwood into a superbly-timed challenge inside the box on 51 minutes and Darren Ambrose drilling a volley just wide from the resulting corner.

Hall had to clear at full-stretch from Shearer as the striker attempted to reach Carr's 58th-minute cross, and Boumsong powered a header just wide from an N'Zogbia corner three minutes later as Newcastle turned the screw.

Sorondo had to hack off his own line after Milner had headed Carr's cross back across goal, but it was then that Souness made his move, replacing Ambrose and Shola Ameobi with Kluivert and Laurent Robert.

The Frenchman illustrated the frustrating nature of his game when he blasted a 35-yard free-kick straight into the defensive wall within three minutes of his arrival, as some of the home fans amused themselves by throwing paper aeroplanes towards the pitch.

Kluivert saw a 75th-minute volley deflected wide, but there was concern in the home defence five minutes later when Johnson broke clear down the right, although he drove his shot well wide.

The Dutchman thought he had won it three minutes from time when he converted Steven Taylor's pass, but the flag was up and that was that.
