United's win over Levadia saw them progress to the group stage of the UEFA Cup, and despite a wobble Newcastle saw the tie out comfortably.

They now head into Tuesday's draw in Nyon having reaped the rewards of their early start to the season in the Intertoto Cup. The competition has its critics, as history shows that those that play in the Intertoto usually have a slump at Christmas. But Roeder used the competition wisely, using it to replace pre-season friendlies, rather than pack in loads of meaningless fixtures.

Glenn Roeder: "That was the whole reason the boys came back on June 28. Now it has been proved all worthwhile because the group stage is where people sit up and start to take notice of the UEFA Cup.

"We are excited about finding out on Tuesday who will be in our group.

"It has been very worthwhile and we are all extremely satisfied with the outcome."
