We were shocked when Ferguson signed him ... but the Man U boss obviously didn't do his homework on Owen's time at St James' Park.

When asked "why did you sign Owen", Fergie replied: "15 Premiership goals a season!"

It is March, and before Owen was ruled out he had only scored three league goals in United's Premership campaign ... against Man City, Wigan and West Ham.

Ferguson confirmed the striker would miss the rest of the campaign after suffering the injury in the Carling Cup final victory over Aston Villa last Sunday.

Owen admitted before the injury that he was a "long shot" to make Fabio Capello's World Cup squad but any hope he had of making it to South Africa is 'down the pan'.

To be honest, I was amazed at the guy on our message board who suggested Owen was "a good signing for Newcastle, because he scored almost one goal every two games".

The fact he only played one game in four, and cost us an amazing £40m in fees and wages, suggests different.
