Owen has engaged the services of Dyer's personal trainer. The 27-year-old is making encouraging progress .

Glenn Roeder: "With this break for his knee injury, we are trying to strengthen Michael's hamstrings too," said Roeder, who is confident that Newcastle supporters will see Owen in action this season.

"He has had problems with the right hamstring for years, ever since his Liverpool days, and, while his knee is being properly attended to, he wants to spent the next couple of months focusing on his hamstrings too.

"He has seen how Kieron can now accelerate without a second of doubt. It is a case of `bang' and off he goes. He wants to get back to that level, whereby he feels that `bang', and he can go without worrying, like it was when he was a kid before the first few hamstring problems.

"Michael is doing three days a week with the same personal trainer as Kieron had. He can see the light at the end of the tunnel and the light is growing every week.

"He's working fantastically hard and it will be great to get him back this season.

"Every step is a forward step. I have got a target written up in my office for him. Michael wants to play this season and that target is keeping him going.

"If that is what he wants, there's no way that I'm going to discourage him or advise him otherwise. It is down to how he feels."
