Over To YOU Shepherd!

The Magpies' boss has given Freddy Shepherd a list of players he would like, and now it's all down to the Fat Man.

Roeder has already confirmed he would like Shaun Wright-Phillips, Steed Malbranque and Darren Bent but whether he gets them, only one man knows.

Roeder: "I understand that every day that goes by our fans are expecting a new face to walk through that door. It (the expectation) is natural. It's the same at every club around the country, but I'm not getting frustrated. I know how the system works, you can't just pick up the phone and sign a player in 24 hours like you used to be able to.

"There are so many factors involved that it just does not work like that any more and it can take three or four weeks these days.

"We have to remember that the (Premiership) season doesn't begin until August 19. What would be the point of bringing someone in next week because the first choice is not available yet? He might become available before the season starts and then I would be wondering why I didn't wait that little bit longer.

"From my experience of chairmen, they don't tell the manager how much he has to spend. The chairman asked me to put a list together and that suggests that we will be bringing new players in. This, the identification of talent that fits into your game plan, is undoubtedly the hardest part of the job, but if we can sign the players I have selected, we will have a very good chance of a good season."
