Allardyce takes charge for his first game since being named Newcastle boss in May and is expected to name new boys Joey Barton, Geremi and David Rozehnal in the starting line-up.

Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins are expected to lead the line, with Mark Viduka away on international duty, although they may not be involved from the very start. Troubled Spaniard Albert Luque could be in the starting line-up.

Allardyce: "I think everything is going well with the players we've got. We've had Geremi join us now, James Milner and Steven Taylor, who was injured, along with Albert Luque are back in the fold.

"I've seen Damien Duff for the first time today, and the pot is off his foot, so I've managed to get around all of the players and managed to get to know them.

"The rest, who were fit, have been training extremely well and are at a different stage. Some have done a great pre-season already in Austria, some have been away on international duty and some have been injured.

"We're all looking forward to our game against Hartlepool, where most of the players will play 45 minutes or up to an hour at the very most.

"This will take the pre-season up to the next level which will be at Carlisle on Saturday."
