Newcastle are unhappy with the date chosen for their rearranged game against Sky Bet Championship promotion rivals Brighton.
Rafael Benitez's men were due to travel to the Amex Stadium on January 28, but due to both clubs' involvement in the FA Cup fourth round it has been changed to February 28.
But that date could also be no good if either team are required to play a fifth-round replay in the same competition.
Newcastle were hoping to play the game later on in the season but claim Brighton and the English Football League rejected their proposal.
A statement on the club's website read: "The new fixture date will see Magpies supporters facing three away games in just seven days.
"Should either Brighton or Newcastle reach the FA Cup fifth round and be taken to a replay, the league match at the Amex Stadium will again be rescheduled at much shorter notice.
"For this reason, Newcastle made a submission for alternative dates to be considered later in the season, however this was rejected by the EFL and Brighton."
Brighton are a point behind Newcastle having played a game less, with the two teams favourites to claim the two automatic promotion places.
