Previously he had said his Reading team were making their visit to St James' Park at the right time, because the Magpies were in turmoil.

But he received a bloody nose ... as the Toon players turned the "turmoil" to their own advantage and set out to prove a point.

Sadly, for Rodgers, the Newcastle players didn't lie down and die for him. Quite the opposite, the kicked him in the 'stots'.

Brendan Rodgers: "It's one we won't cry about. It was a great experience today here for the young players.

"It [Newcastle] is a wonderful club with a big history and stature and it was good for my players to experience that, and we will be better."
