Magpies supremo Sir John Hall revealed in July that he had received an approach for the 28.5 percent shareholding he owns in the Tyneside club.

An unnamed English buyer made the approach, with further rumours of Malaysian interest surfacing, but the club have now confirmed that no formal offer ever followed the initial approach, and that Hall now considers the matter to be closed.

"On July 25, 2005 the board of Newcastle United announced that it had been informed by Sir John Hall, representing Wynyard (Guernsey) Limited ("Wynyard") which owns approximately 28.5 percent of Newcastle United, that Wynyard had received an approach to acquire its shareholding in Newcastle United," read a club statement.

"The board has today been informed by the directors of Wynyard that no formal approach was made to Wynyard following this approach, and that the directors of Wynyard now consider the matter closed."
