No problems for big three

The key trio all ended the season in the physios room with Shearer suffering a broken ankle, Speed a groin injury and Dyer a recurrence of his shin problem but a summer of rest seems to have done the trick.

Fitness coach Paul Winsper was delighted by the condition the three returned in and reports that there are no other problems with the rest of the squad.

"You can see that everybody's looked after themselves over the summer," Winsper told the evening Chronicle.

"Some players like Kieron Dyer have obviously been told to rest but he's naturally fit, as is Craig Bellamy and Jonathan Woodgate.

"Gary Speed's been training hard over the summer and is a great example to the young players. He always trains through the summer and enjoys the fitness work. He's an inspirational figure and helps me do my job.

"And from today I've got Alan Shearer for fitness work, so we've got a full squad to work with. As far as I know there are no problems with the internationals either."

Those of you who remember the disastrous result of our participation in meaningless pre-season tournament the Umbro Cup a few seasons back will probably want to wait until after the Asia Cup before breathing a sigh of relief.
