For reasons unclear at the moment, Gretna were forced to stick with youngster Greg Fleming. Celtic came from 1-0 down - and with only four minutes to go - scored two goals to rob the Premiership newcomers a historic win.

The former Newcastle, Hibernian and Carlisle United shot-stopper has signed on amateur terms until January after receiving authorisation from the Scottish Premier League.

Caig has been training with the Black and Whites after leaving the Canadian side in June under the impression he could sign with the Clydesdale Bank Premier League newcomers.

The 33-year-old returned to the UK for family reasons with three months of his contract remaining but the Whitecaps refused to release him before the transfer deadline on August 31.

Caig then attempted to sign as an amateur but was told by the SPL he would not be allowed to play first-team games.

However, he has now been registered with the First Division champions after receiving international clearance late on Saturday.

Caig started his career with Carlisle and made more than 250 appearances in eight years with the Cumbrian outfit.

He also had spells with Blackpool, Charlton Athletic and Hibernian before moving to Newcastle to provide cover for Shay Given and Steve Harper.

He left St James' Park after three years and made the switch to North America, where he established a new league record of 11 clean sheets while helping Vancouver to the USL First Division Championship.

And, after a frustrating few months on the sidelines, he has rejoined former Carlisle boss Mick Wadsworth and former Brunton Park team-mate Paul Murray, who was recently named Gretna skipper.

After initially being told Caig could not sign until January, Gretna brought in 37-year-old former Rangers keeper Colin Scott out of retirement as back-up to number one Greg Fleming, who has just turned 21.

Scott, who signed until January, had ended a seven-year spell with Queen of the South in the summer after giving up football because of a knee injury.
