No fine for Shearer

The Evening Chronicle has reported that Shearer will not receive any punishment from the club, although the club has not confirmed this.

It is believed that Freddy Shepherd and Sir Bobby have accepted Shearer’s explanation of the incident and think that his Champions League ban is sufficient punishment.

This would appear to be a little unfair on Craig Bellamy whose moment of ill discipline cost him £40,000, although the Welshman does have a recent track record of such offences.

The most disappointing thing about the whole episode is that Marco Materazzi and Fabio Cannavaro have escaped without trial by video – although Cannavaro is suspended for the game against Leverkusen on Tuesday after collecting a third caution at St James’ Park.
