Barcelona were beaten 2-1 at Primera Liga leaders Real Sociedad, despite being handed a first-half lead when former Liverpool keeper Sander Westerveld put through his own goal.

But two goals from Yugoslav forward Darko Kovacevic secured the points for Sociedad and Barca had both Thiago Motta and Marc Overmars dismissed in the closing stages.

The result sees Louis van Gaal’s side slip to 10th in the table, ten points behind Sociedad.

In the Bundesliga Bayer Leverkusen fell to 13th after throwing away a half-time lead to lose 3-2 to Hamburg.

Hamburg opened the scoring through Bernardo Romeo after a mistake by Leverkusen’s

Brazilian skipper Lucio, but goals from Hanno Balitsch and Yildiray Basturk put the home side ahead.

But second-half strikes from Romeo and Barbarez gave Hamburg the points.

Inter had an easy win though, defeating Brescia 4-0 at home, with all four goals coming from Christian Vieri.
