Newcastle offered chance to sign Daniel Sturridge

Exclusive - Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign free agent striker Daniel Sturridge for the remainder of the season.

Sturridge has been without a club since March 2020, when his contract with Turkish side Trabzonspor was terminated after just six months with the team.

Now 31 years old, Sturridge has been keeping fit in anticipation of a possible return to football, with a move to Major League Soccer regularly suggested, but sources have confirmed to 90min that Sturridge believes he is still good enough to play in the Premier League.

West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United have both made contact with Sturridge, but intermediaries have also reached out to Newcastle who have just lost star striker Callum Wilson to a hamstring injury.

The Magpies' top scorer with ten goals this year, Wilson is expected to miss up to two months of action, leaving Steve Bruce with only Joelinton, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle as senior strikers to choose between.

With each of that trio managing just one goal each this season, intermediaries have offered Newcastle the chance to bring in Sturridge on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Sturridge is open to any Premier League offers as he is keen to prove both his fitness and his level, and the interest in him means a potential move could arrive before the current campaign comes to a close.

Newcastle are yet to make a decision on Sturridge while they consider all their options, one of which is former Leicester striker Ahmed Musa.

The Nigerian, who is also a free agent after leaving Saudi side Al-Nassr in October, was recently training with West Brom but was not offered a contract with Sam Allardyce's side. Southampton and West Ham are also interested.
