Newcastle Go Quiet On Barton!

They released the following statement:

"Newcastle United notes the sentence passed to Joey Barton at Liverpool Crown Court today. The club is considering the verdict and will be making no further comment at this moment."

Barton joins a grand team of Jailbirds .... and The Mirror came up with this team.

1. Goalkeeper - Rene Higuita
The Colombian stopper - think 'Scorpion' kick - spent seven months inside in 1993 after acting as a go-between between two drug barons

2. Defender - Tony Adams
The ex Arsenal skipper was jailed for nine months in 1990 for drink-driving and reckless driving offences

3. Defender - Gary Charles
The former Notts Forest and England international was jailed TWICE - once for drink driving and for cutting off his electronic tag to go on holiday to the Costa del Sol

4. Defender - Terry Fenwick
The Spurs/QPR and England fullback was given a four-month sentence in 1991 for drink-driving

5. Defender - Jamie Lawrence
The Jamaica international was jailed for robbery as a youngster and spotted by a local football team while playing for the prison side

Midfield - Peter Storey
The former Arsenal and England midfielder was sentenced to 28 days for attempting to import pornography in 1990

7. Midfield - Joey Barton
The Newcastle midfielder was jailed for six months for attacking a man in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of December 27 last year

8. Midfield - George Best
The Man Utd legend, who died in 2005, was convicted of drink-driving and assaulting a policeman in 1984. He served two months of a 12-week stretch

9. Midfield - Jermaine Pennant
The Liverpool winger/midfielder was sentenced to three months inside for drink driving in 2005. After his release, he became the first player to play while wearing an electronic tag

10. Striker - Duncan Ferguson
Rangers striker Duncan Ferguson was jailed for three months for head-butting Raith Rovers defender John McStay in April 1994. He served 44 days in Glasgow's notorious Barlinnie prison

11. Striker - Lee Hughes
The former West Brom frontman was sentenced to six years behind bars in 2004 for causing death by dangerous driving
