The tag of "Sick Note" has bothered him, and he knows he owes Newcastle a lot as he has battled back from two seasons of injury problems to recapture something of his best form.

Dyer: "I think all my problems with injury and illness have made me fall back in love with the game. You do take this job for granted, and to have it taken away for 18 months with people saying your career could be over, makes you fall in love with it again.

"You can't wait to get back training, and you can't wait to be back playing again. I'm just gutted that the season is going to be over in a few weeks. But that's life.

"There are two big England games coming up against Israel and Andorra. Steve McClaren and Terry Venables will have their ideas, and I hope I'm in the squad to find out what those ideas are."
