Newcastle United have asked about Manchester United defender Luke Shaw, but the deal appears to already be off the table.

The Sun reports that Rafa Benitez is determined to strengthen his options on the left-hand side of defence and had seemingly hoped that Shaw could be the player to fill the void, despite his difficult time at Old Trafford.

Newcastle made an enquiry for the England international ahead of the January transfer window, according to The Sun, but a deal already looks unlikely as, while Jose Mourinho is keen to sell the former Southampton man who joined for £27 million, he wants £20 million for him - and that is out of Newcastle's price range.

The Sun adds that any hope of a loan deal appears to have also been dashed as Mourinho only wants to get rid of Shaw if he leaves on a permanent basis, so it appears that Benitez will have to look elsewhere if he wants a new left-back.

The news that Shaw is out of Newcastle's price range will disappoint the supporters - but perhaps it will not surprise them given the frustration they endured during the summer transfer window.
